Chemical Peel: What Is It?

By

I recently posted a question for anyone who has advice on a product for a face that has discoloration, acne spots, and pores and I got one answer that got me thinking. This fellow Hubber mentioned the chemical peel procedure and how well it seems to work so, somewhat convinced, I began researching the procedure a little more.

We all want that beautiful skin, you know, the one where you don't need the makeup to show yourself in public. If you're like me, you've tried everything -- the cheap and the expensive... well, maybe not too expensive.

In here I will touch base on what a chemical peel is and some of the procedure's pros and cons. If you or someone you know has facial skin problems, which we all know can be incredibly frustrating, do read on!

What is it?

A chemical peel is a facial procedure, also known as a chemexfoliation or a derma peeling, in which helps improve the skin's appearance. It is a chemical solution that helps bring out the new and improved skin while "throwing away" the old sun damaged layer. It is usually used to help the face but can also be used on the neck and hands.

The cost for this procedure depends on the type of treatment you get. There are three peel types: Alphahydroxy Acids (AHAs), Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA), and Phenol.

It does take some time for the results to start showing depending on the level of damage the skin had, going anywhere from three to seven days. Some with higher levels of skin damage may have to return for more treatment that can go up to six weeks, if not more.

Pros

Some common problems the procedure can help cure are: sun-damage, freckles, wrinkles, liver spots, acne scars, and discoloration among other things with each type of peel having its own benefits:

Alphahydroxy Acids:

  • Skin texture
  • Sun damage
  • Skin tones
  • Acne

Trichloroacetic Acid:

  • Fine lines
  • Acne
  • Skin tones

Phenol:

  • Sun damage
  • Discoloration
  • Wrinkles
  • Cancer growths

For more serious skin problems, the Phenol treatment is recommended.

Cons

Like with any procedure or medication, there may be side effects to the chemical peel depending on the type of peel and the skin's reaction. Some negative side effects, by peel, may include:

Alphahydroxy Acids:

  • Sensitive to sun
  • Dryness
  • Redness
  • Irritation

Trichloroacetic Acid:

  • Uneven skin tone/color
  • Sensitivity to sun

Phenol:

  • Skin lightening
  • Inability to tan
  • Sensitivity to sun

*Testing out a spot on the face might be the best idea to know exactly how your skin would react.

As with any procedure, please research and talk to your dermatologist about the benefits, side effects, cost, recovery time, and whether there is any other solution you can try that may help you before trying the chemical peel.

It is very frustrating having to hide behind the makeup day by day, but thanks to the chemical peel, you don't have to anymore!
